Guild Wars 3 will be buy-to-play, with no subscription fee and no battle pass
Guild Wars 3 will be a buy-to-play game at release. It will carry no subscription fee, no monthly fee, and no battle pass subscription fee. Players buy the game once and play when they want.
ArenaNet's stated reason is that the subscription has changed shape rather than disappeared. Paid battle passes and paid recurring seasonal tracks work as an ongoing fee wrapped in an optional package, and the studio has said that model does not fit how it thinks about player freedom in a Guild Wars game.
Paid content after release means expansions and other things ArenaNet offers for sale, on the terms Guild Wars 2 set. Money buys visual distinction, more ways to express a character, account services, and convenience that saves time. It never buys an unfair advantage over players who spend time instead.
The position goes back to the first Guild Wars in 2005, when a subscription fee was a core part of the MMO model, and it carried forward into Guild Wars 2.
