Ancient Orr: Guild Wars 3's Setting and the Thousand Years of Lore Under It

ConfirmedUpdated 20 August 2026

GW3 takes place in Orr before the Cataclysm sank it — gods in Arah, magic everywhere. What GW1 and GW2 already told us about the kingdom you'll walk.

Every Guild Wars player who's ever been to Orr has been to a corpse. GW1 gave us its drowned ruins as the Prophecies endgame; GW2 gave us the corpse walking — Zhaitan's risen kingdom. Guild Wars 3 does something the franchise has teased for twenty years: it winds the clock back a millennium and lets us stand in Orr while it's alive.

The era, as ArenaNet describes it

The June setting diary places GW3 1,000+ years before the original Guild Wars: before Orr sank, before the gods left Tyria. It's the Orrian golden age — grounded high fantasy, magic blooming through the wilds, and almost no technology. The Elder Dragons' slumber is at its deepest, which is the quiet lore-bomb in the Vaelwardens diary: the dragons exist in this era, asleep, a Chekhov's arsenal the writers can draw on without contradicting anything.

Humanity is young here. Per the humans spotlight, the Six Gods brought humans to Tyria about 700 years before game start, and Cantha, Elona, and Ascalon already stand. The gods aren't distant either — this is the era when they're present, with floating Arah as their city.

What GW1 already told us about this place

The original game's lore (via the Orr page on GuildWiki) sketches the kingdom GW3 will render: a peninsula south of Ascalon, home to Arah, "the city of the gods… once inhabited by the gods Balthazar, Dwayna and Melandru while they shaped Tyria." Orr was Tyria's center of magical scholarship — the famed Scepter of Orr, and the detail we love most: GW1 lore credits Orrian texts with teaching the world how to craft and use signets. Signets are exactly the magic the Vaelwardens wield in GW3. The 2005 skill type you slotted on your Prophecies warrior is this civilization's living craft.

And the ending we already know: during the Charr invasion after the Searing, Vizier Khilbron's forbidden counterspell obliterated the invaders and sank the whole peninsula — the Cataclysm — renaming the Bay of Sirens the Sea of Sorrows. GW3's entire world is on a timer only the players can see. ArenaNet writing a setting whose destruction is canon is the boldest narrative choice in the reveal so far: dramatic irony as a game pillar.

What GW2 adds to the picture

GW2 players bring their own Orr baggage — Zhaitan raising the drowned kingdom, the Pact's push to Arah, the slow cleansing of the land in the years after. The GW2-era wiki's GW3 lore anchors confirm continuity touchpoints: the Order of the Vael, Grenth having succeeded Dhuum (fresh-ish history in GW3's era rather than ancient backstory), lowland kodan, surface asura and Rata Pten, and Isgarren with the Wizard's Court — a name SotO players will recognize with raised eyebrows.

ArenaNet has also committed to a GW2 open-world Orr map that bridges into GW3 and a new Hall of Monuments linking the games. The company clearly wants the thousand-year gap to feel like one world at two timestamps, not two games sharing a name. That's the same thread we're building our cross-game lore pages around: one entity, three eras, honest links.

Why this setting is a smart bet

A prequel dodges the power-creep corner GW2's writers painted into (after you've killed six Elder Dragons, what's left?). It gives new players a clean entry — nothing to catch up on, the world predates the homework — while giving veterans twenty years of dramatic irony. And mechanically, "magic-saturated wilds, no technology" reads like a design constraint chosen to keep the art and systems teams honest about the fantasy: no charr tanks, no asura gates, just a world where the Mavenwrights industrializing magic itself is the transgression the story turns on.

FAQ

Where does Guild Wars 3 take place?

In Orr — the kingdom that's a drowned ruin in GW1 and GW2 — during its golden age, 1,000+ years before the original Guild Wars.

Is Guild Wars 3 before or after Guild Wars 2?

Roughly a millennium before both. It's a prequel to the entire franchise.

Are the Six Gods in Guild Wars 3?

The setting is explicitly the era before the gods left Tyria, with Arah as their city. How directly you'll interact with them is unrevealed.

Does Orr get destroyed in Guild Wars 3?

The Cataclysm that sank Orr happens centuries after GW3's era — established franchise canon. Whether the game ever touches that event is unknown; at its own point in the timeline, Orr thrives.

Are the Elder Dragons in Guild Wars 3?

They exist but are deep asleep in this era, per ArenaNet's dev diary. Nothing suggests they're the story's focus.
